Recently we had a complaint that one of our Pedrollo CPm 100 pumps supplied to a Heat pump installer was causing the pipes to generate a water hammer type sound.
We requested the customer to check that there were no blockages on the suction or the discharge of the pump. All was reported to be 100% perfect and they then insisted that the pump be checked on our test tank.

The pumps were connected to the test tank and found to be generating the correct head and flow. Our attention then turned to the suction strainer and as predicted, the biomass block was clearly evident.
It is really important to recognize that when a pump is installed and working well, then over a period of time the performance reduces, there is the possibility that there is a system fault. In this case a biomass in the water being used for this facility began to blind or block the suction strainer.
Once cleaned the pumps will operate perfectly.
The effect of a blocked suction strainer is that the pump is unable to draw sufficient water into the eye of the impeller to discharge into the pipe system. As one turn on taps the water in the pipe system is drained and the pump battles to maintain the flow. The damage to the pump can be severe resulting in costly repairs.
